The first train on the high-speed route connecting St Petersburg and the Volgan city of Nizhny Novgorod via Moscow has made its maiden voyage in Russia.

The high-speed Sapsan train covered the 442km-long route from Moscow to Nizhni Novgorod in 3 hours 55 minutes.

The Moscow-Nizhni track had undergone a reconstruction worth RUB9.49bn ($306m) for the high-speed trains, according to ITAR-TASS News Agency.

Two Sapsan trains are expected to service the St Petersburg-Moscow-Nizhni Novgorod route at the initial stage, reducing journey time from six to four hours.

The Russian Railways Company said changes may be introduced in the schedules to ensure security of traffic and safety of passengers.
