The US state of Wisconsin has received $46.5m in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds for its $822m high-speed rail programme.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will use the fund for the Milwaukee to Madison high-speed rail corridor that will operate at speeds of up to 117km/h.

The amount will be used to complete preliminary engineering and final design work, conduct programme management activities and complete environmental management plans for the corridor.

Wisconsin also received a $5.7m grant which is currently funding environmental assessments of planned stations between Milwaukee and Madison.
