Work to Begin on Chicago Rail Projects

27 July 2010

The US Department of Transportation has approved a grant agreement to begin work on rail projects in Chicago.

The rail projects are a part of the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency programme, aimed at reducing rail bottlenecks in the Chicago region.

The projects will receive a $100m grant from the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery discretionary programme.

New traffic control systems, track and bridge work, highway-rail grade separation and safety betterments on various rail viaducts are included in the projects.

It also involves grade separations and rail-to-rail connections that will benefit highway users and permit more seamless connections between railroads.

The programme has 46 rail and 25 highway rail grade separation projects in the Chicago metropolitan area.
