The US will have to spend an estimated $77.7bn to bring its transit systems into a state of good operating order, with most of the backlog attributed to rail, according to a study by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
The study also says a yearly average of $14.4bn would be required to maintain the nation's transport systems.
The FTA's National State of Good Repair Assessment study is a follow-up to the 2009 rail modernisation report submitted to the US Congress.
The study is based on data provided by 36 additional rail and bus operators in rural and urban areas.
