South Africa will spend R14.5bn ($1.9bn) to develop integrated rapid public transport networks (IRPTNs) over the next three years.
The IRPTNs will introduce priority rail corridors in South African cities, according to engineeringnews.co.za.
The country will invest more than R6bn ($794m) in the networks between 2010 and 2011, with a further R8.5bn ($1.12bn) invested over the next two years.
Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele said an additional R25bn ($3.3bn) would be spent on improving the country's passenger rail service over the next three years.
