07 July 2010

Czech firm OHL ZHS has received an €84m ($106m) contract to upgrade a rail link in Bulgaria.

The contract, awarded by the National Railway Infrastructure, involves work on a 19km railway connecting Svilengrad and the Turkish border.

The project includes electrification, grade separation of level crossings and wiring of the Serbian line from Nis to the Bulgarian border.

The work is intended to raise the capacity of the railway from 52 to 70 trains a day and permit speeds of up to 200km/h.

The project is expected to fully integrate Bulgaria into wider EU transport networks, according to railwaygazette.com.
