Austin Plans Urban Rail System

29 June 2010

The US city of Austin is planning to construct a 17-mile urban rail system, totalling about $1bn.

The rail line, with a travel time of about 30min, will run seven days a week and carry 28,000 weekday riders by 2030, according to austin.bizjournals.com.

The proposed system is expected to have about three miles more of track than initially planned and 13 extra passenger cars.

The operating cost for the track from Mueller to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is expected to cost between $22m and $25m.

The city is looking at finalising a 2012 bond package and is seeking federal grants and loans to supplement funding.
