Massachusetts Buys Rail Lines from CSX

21 June 2010

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) in the US has acquired rail lines from CSX Transportation on the South Coast Rail project.

The acquisition involves the purchase of 30 miles of track linking Taunton to New Bedford and Fall River in the state.

The South Coast Rail project will restore a commuter rail service between Boston and the South Coast region to reduce pollution, relieve traffic congestion and extend commuter rail to south-eastern Massachusetts.

MassDOT is also planning to rebuild three railroad bridges in New Bedford as part of the project, which is scheduled to begin this year.
