China to Invest in High-Speed Rail Construction

09 June 2010

China will spend CNY700bn ($102bn) on constructing over 11,000km of high-speed rail track by the end of 2010.

Projects currently underway include the Harbin-Beijing line and a north-south line connecting Harbin and Fujian provinces in south-east China.

The existing Beijing to Tianjin high-speed line, which travels at 350km/hr, is expected to act as the standard for the nation's high-speed system, according to straitstimes.com.

China is expected to construct 42 high-speed railway lines by 2012 as part of an ambitious rail development programme aimed at increasing the national network.
