Thales Consortium Receives Spanish Rail Contract

03 June 2010

A Thales-led consortium has received a €136m ($166.4m) contract to install communications and safety infrastructure for a tunnel on the north to north-west high-speed link in Spain.

The contract was awarded by the Spanish Administrator of Railway Infrastructures.

The project involves handling signalling, train protection, and safety and security systems for the 87.5km-long Orense-Santiago de Compostela section of the tunnel.

It also includes a centralised control centre and fixed telecommunication network, according to eurasiareview.com.

Thales will be responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of the European train control system, track circuits, axle counters and auxiliary systems.

The awarded section is the final stretch of the Madrid-Galicia high-speed line, which will connect the capital with north-west Spain.

The high-speed railway section is expected to reduce the travel time between Orense and Santiago de Compostela in Spain by 70%.
