25 May 2010

Genesee & Wyoming Inc (GWI) has received the rail industry's top award for safety performance in 2009.

The US-based railroad company said it also won four of the six President's Awards from the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA).

GWI claimed the combined injury-frequency rate in 2009 was 0.74 per 200,000 employee hours and about 52 of 62 GWI railroads were expected to be injury-free.

The rail operators Buffalo & Pittsburgh Route earned the E.H. Harriman Gold Award for the best employee safety record among railroads and two President's Awards, both for the best safety performance.

GWI's Willamette & Pacific Railroad and Illinois & Midland Railroad also won the President's Award.

In addition, 40 of GWI's US railroads received Jake Awards from the ASLRRA for completing 2009 with zero FRA-reportable injuries.

GWI operates short line and regional freight railroads in the US, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands.
