China's Rail Passenger Number Increases

China's Ministry of Railways has said the country's passenger numbers stood at 132.7 million in April 2010.

The figure marked an increase of 6.2% year on year, according to chinaknowledge.com.

China's railway passenger volume is expected to have increased 7.1% to 542.4 million in the first quarter of 2010.

The country's rail freight throughput is estimated to have increased 14% to 299.5 million tons for April.

China is expected to have invested CNY823.5bn ($120bn) as fixed asset in the railway industry in 2010.

The amount is expected to have been spent on infrastructure construction worth CNY700bn ($102bn), and for 70 new projects.
