German Group Wins Japanese Rail Order

29 April 2010

Knorr-Bremse has won a contract to deliver traction bogie braking components for EAST Japan Railway's 23 Shinkansen high-speed trains.

The railway's ten-car E5 trains, which use new braking systems, are expected to run at a speed of 320km/h, according to railjournal.com.

Germany-based Knorr-Bremse has developed a compact lightweight brake calliper for the trains to cope with emergency braking.

The Knorr-Bremse’s model, based on an existing modular design, uses brake disks and flexible Isobar sintered brake pads.

The E5 trains are being produced by a consortium of Hitachi and Kawasaki.
