The USA has sanctioned an additional $765m to continue and expand transit work for a rail project benefiting New York and New Jersey.
Part of the project, which totals $8.7bn, will see the extension of the region's nine-mile commuter rail, the US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said.
The project involves building two new tunnels under the Hudson River, new rail tracks and an underground rail station in midtown Manhattan.
It is also expected to help double the rail service capacity into Manhattan, free up capacity for Amtrak, and decrease journey time and overcrowding on trains.
The federal government is expected to commit $3bn towards the mega project.
