DHL Wins UK Network Rail Contract

15 April 2010

The UK's Network Rail has awarded a four-year contract to DHL Supply Chain to provide a road transport planning centre.

The project is worth over £40m ($61m), according to transportintelligence.com.

Network Rail National Delivery Service director Martin Elwood said the contract will help reduce costs and meet sustainability targets.

The facility is expected to manage road haulage requirements for materials and supplies not suited for movement by rail.

The rail authority is expected to save £1.8m in the first year through the better use of road transport.

DHL is also expected to handle the movement of short rail, ballast, sleepers, switches and crossings.

The centre will be based at Network Rail's offices in Milton Keynes.
