HK Awards New Deal for West Island Railway

30 March 2010

A contract worth HK$4.75bn ($612bn) for the West Island rail line in Hong Kong has been awarded to Gammon Construction.

The Hong Kong company's work includes building Sai Ying Pun Station and a 2.2km running tunnel, alongside other structures, on the under-construction line.

The work is an important part of the rail line, which will extend the existing Island Line from Sheung Wan to Kennedy Town and is expected to open in 2014.

The contract has been awarded by a joint venture of Hong Kong's MTR Corporation and Nishimatsu Construction.

Gammon Construction is part owned by UK construction giant Balfour Beatty and Asian group Jardine Matheson.
