Work has begun on the 308km high-speed rail link connecting Chongqing and Chengdu, the Chinese Ministry of Railways has said.
The railway link is expected to halve the two-hour travel time between the two major cities in southwest China, according to chinadaily.com.
Around 66% of the rail track is expected to go over bridges and through tunnels due to the mountainous terrain.
The project, which includes building 12 stations, is expected to take four years.
China is expected to have more than 110,000km of operational railways, including 13,000km of high-speed rail, by 2012.
