A new station is to be built at the World Trade Center site in New York by Skanska and Granite Construction in a $525m contract from the Port Authority.
The new station will form part of PATH, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's commuter rail system, which links New Jersey to downtown Manhattan.
The contract involves the placement of cast-in-place concrete to construct the new station platforms 36ft below and west of New York City Transit's (NYCT) subway line.
A transit hall will be added later to connect the new station with NYCT trains.
The contract also plans to work on existing platforms and tracks, in addition to building a fourth platform.
An East/West connector and West Street underpass will also be completed, linking the station to the World Financial Center.
The work is expected to take place around fully operational PATH trains.
Swedish group Skanska, which shares 80% of the contract, will execute all civil work in conjunction with Granite Construction.
The project is scheduled to begin in late March and reach completion by May 2014.
