Israel Orders Siemens Light Rail Coaches

11 March 2010

Israel Railways has awarded a €47m ($63.7m) contract to German firm Siemens to supply 31 Viaggio Light passenger coaches in 2011.

The fleet, which includes 27 intermediate cars and diesel-generator sets and four driving trailers, will serve the new line linking Tel Aviv with its suburb Rishon Le-Zion.

Siemens Mobility CEO Hans-Jörg Grundmann said the follow-up order underscored the company's good relationship with Israel Railways.

The order follows a 2006 contract for 87 passenger coaches, which included an option for another 585 cars.

The low-floor trains can run at 160kmph, with intermediate cars featuring four-place facing seating for 82 passengers, and driving trailers featuring a driver's cab, machine room, and a passenger compartment with 27 seats.
