Metrolink has become the first commuter rail service in America to adopt crash energy management (CEM) carriages, having received two of its latest order. These are the first of 117 cars the agency will put into service in 2010.
The cars were acquired as part of a comprehensive rail safety programme. They feature a unique collision-absorption technology and were manufactured in South Korea.
Metrolink started research and design work on the cars more than five years ago.
Metrolink board chairman Keith Millhouse said final assembly of the new carriages will be carried out at Metrolink's Eastern Maintenance Facility in the city of Colton.
