German City Tests Galileo on Trams

23 February 2010

European global positioning system Galileo will be tested on the tram system in Halle, Germany, by operator Hallesche Verkehrs (Havag).

The trial of the new navigation and traffic management system, which falls under a research project on practical applications of Galileo, will be carried out over the next two or three years on a specially equipped tram.

It is designed to enable prompt information transfer of the impact of disruptions, including congestion on the passenger timetable, as well as allowing for better traffic light management.

Havag expects the system to be ready in 2014, according to intertraffic.com.
