First Indonesian Private Railway to Open in 2011

17 February 2010

Indonesia's first private railway will be commissioned in early 2011, the Middle East joint venture company MEC Infrastructure has said.

The 130km integrated freight corridor will link Muaran Wahau to the port of Bengalon in Kalimantan province, and is part of infrastructure development for a major MEC coal mining project, according to Zawya.com.

MEC, which includes Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority and Dubai's Trimex's MEC Holdings, said it expects to commission the first cargo train in 2011 with the first phase of development expected to handle a capacity of 32 million tonnes per annum of coal.

The company plans to spend nearly $1bn on the project.
