German City Orders Stadler Light Rail

The German city of Stuttgart's transport operator Stuttgarter Strassenbahnen has awarded a €77m ($107m) contract to Swiss firm Stadler Rail to supply 20 Tango light rail vehicles.

The 38.6m-long and 2.65m-wide two-section vehicle can accommodate 108 seats and 144 standing places, and can reach a top speed of 80kmph.

The vehicle corresponds to Stuttgarter Strassenbahnen's S-DT8 light rail vehicles that operate on 192km of lines serving the city centre as well as suburban communities.

The fleet will be delivered by Stadler Pankow beginning from 2012.
