Amtrak Plans Fleet Upgrade

14 January 2010

US long-distance passenger rail operator Amtrak is planning to purchase over 100 locomotives and several hundred passenger cars to upgrade its ageing fleet.

The company has already begun negotiations with rail manufacturers, according to Bloomberg.

Further details including when and how much investment the operator would make for the purchase are expected to be revealed in February.

The operator has nearly 1,800 trains and locomotives and had made its last major purchase in the 1990s for 20 new trains for its high-speed Acela service.
