Australian railway company UGL has signed China's Huawei Technologies to deliver radio communications upgrades for its subsidiary RailCorp's digital train radio system project in New South Wales.
Huawei will replace RailCorp's existing analogue radio network with its end-to-end GSM-R network for the $225m project.
The project covers 1,455km of track, stables and rail sidings and 70km of rail tunnels across the Sydney metro rail network. It also includes installing radios and interface equipment on 675 train cabs.
According to Huawei, the technology can help interconnect various rail operating systems for a complete voice communications network, which will optimise the controlling, signalling and orbital transfer of locomotives, as well as improve the communication between trainmen and railway stations.
Work is expected to be carried out over the next 30 months.
