Network Rail Orders 700 GSM-R Radios

24 December 2009

UK rail operator Network Rail has placed an order for over 700 GSM-R hand-portable radios with Telent as part of its plan to deploy a national GSM-R network.

Of the total, some radios will be provided to the train crew and will be issued with a railway emergency call only facility.

The radios provided to engineers will be able to access key network performance data to support national deployment and site commissioning.

Nearly 35 sets, enabled to provide network measurement facilities to speed up trackside monitoring, will be given to the commissioning teams and 250 radios will be provided to the maintenance staff.

The radios will be manufactured by Italian group Finmeccanica subsidiary SELEX Communications.

Delivery is scheduled for the end of 2009.
