ABB to Power London Underground

22 December 2009

The UK's Transport for London has signed Swiss firm ABB to supply a point substation to power the London Underground rail system.

Under the $70m deal, the company will supply, install and commission the Edgware Road substation and supply products including 22 kV and 11kV switchboards as well as coupling transformers.

Work includes installing nearly 20km of 22kV and 11kV power cable in the tunnels and ducts and is expected to finish in 2012.

The new substation will help upgrade the railway's power system as well as support fleet expansion on the Circle, District, Hammersmith, City and Metropolitan lines, scheduled for mid-2010.
