Transnet Orders 100 GE Locomotives

22 December 2009

GE Transportation will supply 100 locomotives to South African state-owned rail operator Transnet for its rail freight logistics unit Transnet Freight Rail.

The fleet will be the first AC diesel electric locomotives to be introduced to sub-Saharan Africa, according to GE.

The company's subsidiary GE South African Technologies will supply the C30ACi model, which will feature a 3,300GHP engine and an electronic fuel injection system to automatically supply the exact amount of fuel needed for optimal engine efficiency.

The delivery of the locomotives is scheduled to begin in early 2011.
