Alcatel-Lucent to Modernise Channel Tunnel's Communications

17 December 2009

Cross-Channel rail operator Eurotunnel has signed French firm Alcatel-Lucent to modernise the communications infrastructure in the Channel Tunnel, in time for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The company will deploy its European standard interoperable GSM-R radio-communications solution across the entire Eurotunnel network.

The system will improve voice and data communications for operations, allow track to train radio communications between the Railway Control Centre and the train driver and record communications.

The company will also provide services such as end-to-end integration, deployment, testing and maintenance.

The $31m (€21.5m) project is expected to improve the Tunnel's safety, reliability and capacity.
