US Western High Speed Rail Alliance Formed

15 December 2009

Five US regional planning agencies in the Rocky and Intermountain West regions have formed the Western High Speed Rail Alliance (WHSRA) to create a high-speed freight and passenger rail system in the region.

The alliance aims at constructing a Denver to Los Angeles high-speed rail network, which will link regional hubs in Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Denver and Phoenix.

The WHSRA will now conduct studies on the proposed corridors to be built over the next 20 years and will request $50m through the Surface Transportation Act that Congress is expected to consider next year.

The alliance includes the Denver Regional Council of Governments, the Maricopa Association of Governments of the greater Phoenix Area, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada of Las Vegas, the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County in Reno and the Utah Transit Authority of Salt Lake City.
