Transtelecom has signed a $100m deal with Alcatel-Lucent to modernise the telecommunication network of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), the state-owned railway.
Alcatel-Lucent will help build a fast, reliable and efficient mission-critical WAN infrastructure for the railway to allow the delivery of new services and improve passenger and cargo traffic handling capabilities to international standards.
The company will supply a turnkey integrated solution based on its optical multi-service transport solution and its IP/MPLS portfolio.
The project's completion will extend the lengths of the fibre-optic network by 4,000km.
The modernised network is expected to increase the competitiveness of exports on the international market as well as improve track maintenance to allow for remote monitoring and diagnosis and removing the need for specialists at remote sites.
