The Chinese province of Guangdong's proposed 580km light rail transit (LRT) system in the Pearl River delta region has been given the government's go ahead.

The National Development and Reform Commission approved the plan recently, according to province officials.

The LRT network is to include 23 intercity routes totalling 1,890km and is expected to be operational by 2012.

The provincial transport department has issued $1.46bn (CNY10bn) worth of medium-term notes for the project.
