RFF Unveils Next-Gen Electronic Interlocking System

03 December 2009

French rail operator Réseau Ferré de France (RFF) has inaugurated the Thales-supplied new-generation electronic interlocking system on its rail network at Longueau.

Thales' PIPC G2 system manages 178 itineraries and controls 61 sets of points and 75 light signals at Longueau.

The system controls train movements in stations, determines train positions in real time, establishes itineraries inside stations by controlling the points and allows trains to move when instructed by light signals.

The system, which is part of RFF's ongoing rail renovation programme, is aimed at enhancing safety and optimising the operational efficiency as well as operating and maintenance costs.

The interlocking system will be rolled out over the entire French rail network during the next ten years.
