Siemens Train System Chosen for Vienna Underground

02 December 2009

Austrian capital city Vienna's mass transit operator Wiener Linien has signed Siemens Mobility to supply an automatic train control system for the Vienna underground.

The €25m contract is for the fourth phase of the underground's extension project, which involves extending the U1 line by 6km to the south and U2 by 4km to the east.

Siemens will supply electronic interlockings for the line extensions as well as for the underground's oldest maintenance depot and integrate all of the new interlockings in the central control room.

The company will use its computer-aided signalling element control system with the LZB513 continuous automatic train control system and the Vicos OC111 operations control system.

Work is scheduled to begin in 2010 and finish in 2015.

The existing 70km Viennese metro system has five lines and 85 stations, and carries nearly 500 million passengers a year.
