Ottawa city council in Canada has selected light rail transit technology for the city's rapid-transit expansion.
The approval is a major decision in the city's railway plan.
The technology has been chosen over monorail, automated guideway transit, heavy rail, light metro and metro types.
Light rail is preferred as it works well for high-volume downtown cores as well as lower-volume suburbs, and provides low-floor vehicles to reduce infrastructure costs at stations as well as a single-vehicle model for the entire fleet to reduce maintenance costs.
Under the plan, two stations will located directly in Centretown – one expected near Bay and Albert streets and another at O'Connor and Queen streets – with two more expected to border the neighbourhood from the east and west.
