Funds Granted for Tanzania-Rwanda-Burundi Rail Study

23 November 2009

The African Development Fund will finance a multinational railway project study in Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.

The study will cover the second phase of the Dar es Salaam-Isaka-Kigali/Keza-Musongati railway project and involves work on the existing 970km Dar es Salaam-Isaka railway link and its extensions.

Under the railway plan, four mining sites will be linked to the Keza-Musongati section by 50km branch lines impacting Rwanda, Burundi and the north-west Tanzanian regions of Shinyanga and Kagera.

The study, using the bank's $8.15m of loan and grant, will enable the governments of Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi to help mobilise financing, and with project implementation and railway infrastructure management, the bank said.
