GE to Provide BASF with Rail Monitoring

12 November 2009

German firm BASF has signed GE Capital's Asset Intelligence unit to provide GPS-based monitoring for part of its fleet.

Under the five-year agreement, GE will provide its VeriWise solution, developed along with BASF Transportation Command, which includes motion, temperature, impact and tampering sensors to help BASF ensure the security of its fleet.

The system includes features that generate operational savings such as event-based location information to save customers from paying errant demurrage claims.

BASF Logistics technology manager Steven Williams said VeriWise would provide the company with an ever-present watchful eye on its fleet.

"The technology enhances the safety and security of our shipments, helps us monitor the conditions inside our cars and provides decision support tools for our rail operations team to help increase overall productivity," Williams said.
