Work on the A$300m (US$272m) Southern Sydney Freight Line in Australia has been stopped until further notice due to flaws in the project's design.
The project involves building a 36km freight line between Macarthur and Sefton to separate the goods line from passenger services in south-western Sydney.
The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), which had been carrying out the project, said that three issues in the planning had directly affected the project.
The issues include signalling system changes, track redesign, and telephone and electricity lines that had not been relocated prior to commencing construction.
ARTC said the project was being re-evaluated to identify the most cost-effective options in moving forward.
Originally scheduled to finish in early 2010, work has now been delayed for two years as the signalling problems are not expected to be resolved until 2011.
