The US capital city of Washington's transit agency Metro will trial new anti-crash software on its network next week, said officials.
The new software will, in real time, feed back the status of all circuits and connections within the rail system and serve as a backup for the existing crash-prevention system.
In case of a malfunction, a visual and audio alarm will be triggered on the controllers' screens at Metro's operations centre.
The new system was developed after the US National Transportation Safety Board told the agency that its existing crash-prevention system was inadequate, after the fatal 22 June Red Line accident that killed nine people and injured 80.
The system has been developed by US firm ARINC with the agency's assistance.
