India Upgrades to Broad Gauge

28 October 2009

The Indian state of Gujarat has announced a $78m (INR362.62 crore) plan to convert nearly 2,000km of rail track from metre gauge to broad gauge.

Gujarat is the only state in the country to have such a large metre-gauge track network. The project will see the entire rail network in the state converted into broad gauge.

Work will be funded from the state's railway budget of $95m (INR442.62 crore) and be carried out over the next three to four years.
