Thales Selects BelAir for Bergen Light Rail Signalling

22 October 2009

Thales has partnered with Canadian firm BelAir Networks to provide onboard and trackside Wi-Fi infrastructure for Norway's Bergen Light Rail project.

The Wi-Fi network consists of 40 BelAir100 nodes along the 12km tram network as well as 24 BelAir20M mobile access points installed in 12 train cars.

The BelAir20M is mounted on the interior wall or ceiling of the train car providing 802.11 n/b/g Wi-Fi access for Wi-Fi enabled devices.

The second radio of the BelAir20M backhauls the traffic from onboard devices to the BelAir100 trackside infrastructure.

The rail project is expected to finish by 2010 and is expected to cater to nearly 380,000 passengers.

Thales is responsible for the rail signalling, telecommunications, passenger information, traffic priority and traffic control and supervision systems for the project.
