Siemens to Help Extend Finnish Metro

01 October 2009

The capital of Finland Helsinki's public transport operator has awarded a €56m contract to German firm Siemens, to supply technical equipment for its planned 14km extension of the existing metro network.

The company will supply the automatic control system, the operations control centre, the signalling system, the onboard communication, the platform access doors and the dynamic passenger information system for the new seven-station extension to Espoo.

The new contract follows the 2008's €100m deal between the operator and Siemens to renovate the existing metro line.

The existing driverless metro system will begin operations from 2013 and the extension is expected to open in 2014.
