Canadian firm Bombardier has announced that its Chinese joint venture has won a $4bn (CNY27.4bn) contract from the Chinese Ministry of Railways to supply 80 high-speed trains.

The joint venture, Bombardier Sifang, includes Chinese firm CSR Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock. Bombardier's share in the contract is set to be worth $2bn (CNY13.5bn).

The ordered fleet includes 20 eight-car trainsets and 60 16-car trainsets.

The vehicles will feature Bombardier's Zefiro high-speed rail technology, Mitrac propulsion and control system and Eco4 energy-saving technology with maximum attainable speeds of 380kmph.

The fleet is part of China's ongoing rail expansion project to construct over 6,000km of new high-speed lines across the country.

Delivery of the first train is scheduled for 2012 with the remainder to arrive in 2014.
