The Brazilian city of Sao Paulo's regional rail operator CPTM has awarded a $41m contract to Swiss group ABB to upgrade the power system on the city's rail network.
The company will supply three high-and medium-voltage rectifier substations (138kV, 88kV and 34.5kV) and one 3kV DC supply to power the trains. The company will also upgrade the two existing 34.5kV substations.
The power upgrade is part of the operator's plans for a four-fold expansion of the rail and metro network in the city and is expected to be finished within 24 months.
The plan includes doubling capacity by renovating lines, constructing and refurbishing stations and other infrastructure and expanding the rolling stock fleet.
The city has a 261km rail network that caters to nearly two million passengers daily.
