Work Progresses on $15m Australian Rail Bridge

10 September 2009

Work is in progress on the $15m Brooklyn Sunshine Triangle rail bridge project in the Australian city of Melbourne and is scheduled to finish by October.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) recently finished a key part of the project with the lowering of a 45m 100t steel girder across Sunshine Road.

The project involves building a new seven-pier bridge at the junction of the ARTC's North South and East West rail networks close to the Tottenham Rail Yard.

The bridge will provide an improved connection between Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane and will eliminate the need to shunt trains around the Tottenham Yard, saving time and reducing congestion.

The work is being funded by the Rudd Labour Government and the ARTC and is being undertaken through the Southern Improvement Alliance.

The bridge is part of the government's commitment to invest $7.9bn to modernise the country's rail network and related infrastructure and will open to the public in early 2010.
