Japan Sets up Office to Promote Bullet Trains

04 September 2009

Japan has set up a new office to promote its Shinkansen bullet trains in foreign nations.

The new government international railway strategy office will inform foreign governments of sales points and promote overseas technological cooperation.

The plan targets countries that are developing or planning high-speed railway systems, such as Brazil and Vietnam.

The country is also eyeing opportunities in the US which is planning to introduce high-speed railways under its Green New Deal initiative.

Ministry officials said that Japan's bullet-train system costs less in maintenance than its rivals, such as the French TGV and German ICE systems, and features safety features including an early earthquake detector to prevent derailments.
