Qatar to Call for Bids for One of Five Planned Rail Lines

03 September 2009

Qatar is to tender construction work on its planned express airport rail line, one of the five major rail projects the country will undertake over the next ten years.

The work involves building a new railway station terminal for the rail line which will connect the airport with downtown Doha and other rail networks.

The project, called the Passenger Rail Station Box, is expected to finish in 2011.

The overall project to construct five new rail lines is part of the country's plans to build a national railway system in another ten years.

The lines include an east coast rail link between Ras Laffan and Mesaieed, a high-speed link from Doha to Bahrain across the Qatar Bahrain Causeway, a freight link connected to the planned GCC rail network, a Doha metro network and a light rail network serving residential developments.

Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company and German firm Deutsche Bahn have already developed a conceptual design to bid for the project.
