Spain Plans to Build New Gauge-changing Facility

24 August 2009

Spain is planning to construct a €10m gauge-changing facility along the Brazatortas-Veredas rail route.

The facility will enable trains from Mérida and Badajoz to use the Córdoba high-speed line, which is currently under construction, to reach Madrid.

It will also allow travelling between Madrid and Badajoz in 3 hours 50 minutes as opposed to the current 5 hours 30 minutes.

The country will call for tenders for the work in the last quarter of 2009. Work is expected to take ten months.

The facility is part of the country's €77m plan to improve the Madrid-Badajoz rail route to revive the rail freight sector.
