US to Run Bullet Trains on Solar

19 August 2009

The US is developing a bullet train system that will use solar power as its primary energy source.

The system is being built by Solar Bullet LLC and is in its early stages of development.

The system will use modular manufacturing technology and integrated aerospace technology. It will generate electricity for use along with power required to run the trains.

The 220mph solar bullet trains will run on 110MW of solar power generated from overhead panels.

The system is primarily being built for the country's southwest region that has one of the broadest areas of high-density solar exposure, with initial focus on major cities such as Phoenix and Tucson.

The trains will run on four tracks. The innermost two tracks will run trains nonstop from Tucson to Phoenix, covering 116 miles in 30 minutes.

The country hopes to receive foreign investment for the planned first $27bn phase.
