US railroad operator Norfolk Southern has announced a $95m plan to build an intermodal terminal in Greencastle to serve the Mid-Atlantic region.
The terminal will be part of the multi-state Crescent Corridor project to enhance the operator's 2,500-mile freight rail network covering the Gulf Coast and Memphis to Harrisburg, Philadelphia and the New York metropolitan area.
The terminal, called the Franklin County Regional Intermodal Facility, will be used for the transfer of freight between trains and trucks.
Norfolk Southern's chief executive officer Wick Moorman said because of its strategic location to key markets in the Mid-Atlantic region, the terminal is vital to the success of the Crescent Corridor.
The terminal will have the capacity to handle over 85,000 containers and trailers annually with four trains serving the terminal daily.
The terminal will use the latest gate and terminal automation technology to reduce waiting time, which will lead to cuts in exhaust emissions.
The terminal is expected to open in 2011.
